Student Nurse

Response 1 from Laura, consolidation student – placed with GP practice in North Sheffield

Did you want to do a General Practice placement?

Upon finding out my consolidating placement was going to be within General Practice I was slightly sceptical; this was due to the fact that I had never had a community placement before. I was also unsure as to what kind of things I would be involved in. In addition to this, I had heard various opinions from students who have previously had placements within General Practice, however I was rather excited about it.

What were the 3 best aspects about this General Practice placement experience?

This particular placement has been my most favourable throughout all my clinical placements. Firstly they are an amazing group of professionals who have welcomed me as part of their team. Secondly they have encouraged me to get involved in as many clinics, visits and procedures, working alongside both Doctors and Nurses. Finally, they have supported my learning and development to enable me to work competently and confidently with minimal supervision during my own clinics.

On reflection could you have done anything to improve your learning experience?

To further improve my learning experience I could have arranged additional visits, however this was particularly difficult due to already having already gained exposure from previous placements.

State any difficulties you encountered as a student on this placement?

The only difficulties I have encountered have been in relation to the administration of PGD drugs i.e. Immunisations/vaccinations. This was however addressed and solved promptly.

Would you recommend a General Practice placement to your peers, if so why?

I would thoroughly recommend a General Practice placement to other students. You are able to widen your knowledge and understanding around chronic diseases, learn about a variety of illness/diseases that are not often encounted within secondary care, interact with individuals outside your own field of practice, and develop good relationships with patients which enables you to individualise their care within the community and prevent them from going into hospital.

Has this placement changed your view of Practice Nursing as a viable future career?

Before starting this General Practice placement I already had a view of working within this area of nursing. This placement has further confirmed this for me; every day is completely different, and I wish to progress into Practice Nursing soon.

Response 2 from Keri, final year student – placed with GP practice in Central Sheffield

(2) Did you want to do a General Practice placement?

A GP placement wasn’t really something that I particularly wanted, I didn’t expect to learn as much as I have whilst I’ve been on placement. I wasn’t against having a GP placement but when I saw that’s where my placement was I was a little concerned that I wouldn’t develop there.

What were the 3 best aspects about this General Practice placement experience?

The three aspects I’ve enjoyed most I would probably say the respiratory work, diabetes clinics & sexual health. The variety of work here is really nice and I feel that my knowledge has really developed

On reflection could you have done anything to improve your learning experience?

I don’t feel that my learning could’ve been improved further really. I was given a list of places to visit by my nurse mentor on induction and have managed to get to all of the places that I wanted to and follow patient journeys. I work with three practice nurses as they’re part time so get a wide variety of knowledge from them.

State any difficulties you encountered as a student on this placement?

I haven’t encountered any difficulties whilst I’ve been here.

Would you recommend a General Practice placement to your peers, if so why?

I would definitely recommended a GP placement to my peers, I have thoroughly enjoyed mine and feel that I have learnt a lot about a wide variety of medical problems. My public health knowledge has also developed due to the health promotion work done here.

Has this placement changed your view of Practice Nursing as a viable future career?

My view of practice nursing has definitely changed, I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed this placement & the nurses that I’ve worked with have been great. I’ve always felt comfortable asking questions and I’ve always received help and guidance when I’ve needed it. It’s been great, I’ll be really sad to finish the placement.
